Striped bark scorpion on rock in Texas, the species found in Cedar Hill, TX homes along the escarpment

Finding a scorpion in the tub is a rite of passage in Cedar Hill. The striped bark scorpion is the main species in North Texas, and the rocky escarpment gives it plenty of places to live.

Meet the Striped Bark Scorpion

It is tan to yellowish with two dark stripes down its back and grows to about two and a half inches. It climbs well, so you may find it on walls, ceilings or in the attic. It hunts at night and hides in cracks, under rocks and in debris during the day.

Why Cedar Hill Gets So Many

The White Rock Escarpment runs right through town. Limestone ledges, loose rock and cedar brakes on the west side are ideal scorpion habitat. Homes on the slopes and near the state park and Dogwood Canyon see the most sightings.

Landscaping adds to it. Rock borders, stone walls and mulch beds against brick give scorpions cover right next to the house.

How They Get Inside

  • Brick weep holes along the bottom row of bricks
  • Gaps under exterior doors and garage doors
  • Openings around pipes, wires and AC lines
  • Attic vents and tree limbs touching the roof
  • Firewood carried into the house

If You Get Stung

A striped bark scorpion sting is very painful, often compared to a bad wasp sting, with burning and numbness around the spot. For most healthy adults it is not dangerous. Clean the sting and use a cold pack. Young children, older adults and anyone with an allergic reaction, trouble breathing or symptoms that spread should get medical help right away.

Keeping Them Out

  • Put copper mesh in weep holes so moisture can still escape
  • Install door sweeps and replace worn weather stripping
  • Move firewood, rocks and landscaping timbers away from the walls
  • Shake out shoes and towels, and keep bedding off the floor
  • Reduce crickets and roaches, which scorpions eat

Next Steps

If you are finding scorpions regularly, scorpion control combines treatment with sealing the gaps they use. A general pest plan helps by cutting down their food supply.
