How Scorpion Control Works

Scorpions are tough to kill with sprays alone. They hide in tight cracks during the day and do not groom themselves the way insects do. The work that lasts is mostly about keeping them out, backed by a residual treatment where they travel.

A scorpion service usually includes a treatment around the foundation, the eaves, garage and attic, along with exclusion work. That means copper mesh in brick weep holes, door sweeps and weather stripping, sealing around pipes and wires, and trimming limbs that touch the roof. Scorpions also eat other insects, so a general pest program that cuts down on crickets and roaches makes the house less interesting to them.

Some technicians do a night inspection with a UV light. Scorpions glow under it, which shows where they are coming from.

About the Striped Bark Scorpion

Striped bark scorpions are tan to yellowish with two dark stripes down the back, and they grow to about two and a half inches. They are good climbers and often show up on walls and ceilings or drop out of the attic.

Their sting hurts a lot, often compared to a bad wasp sting, with burning and numbness around the spot. For most healthy adults it is not dangerous. Young children, older adults and anyone with an allergic reaction, trouble breathing or symptoms that spread should get medical help.

Reduce Scorpions Around the House

  • Move firewood, rock piles, bricks and landscaping timbers away from the walls
  • Shake out shoes, towels and clothes left on the floor
  • Pull bedding and bed skirts off the floor in rooms with sightings
  • Keep a strip of bare ground or gravel between mulch beds and the brick

Why the Escarpment Brings Scorpions

Cedar Hill is one of the rockier towns in Dallas County. The White Rock Escarpment runs through it, and the limestone ledges, cedar brakes and loose rock along the hills give striped bark scorpions ideal cover. Homes on the slopes near Cedar Hill State Park, Dogwood Canyon and the wooded parts of the west side tend to report more sightings than homes on flat ground east of US 67.

Landscaping matters too. Rock borders, stone retaining walls and cedar mulch are popular in Cedar Hill yards, and every one of them is scorpion habitat. When that habitat sits against a brick wall with open weep holes, scorpions have a short trip into the wall cavity.

Scorpions move indoors most in two stretches: the hot, dry weeks of July and August, when they look for moisture, and the first cool nights of fall. Bathtubs and sinks catch them because they wander in looking for water and cannot climb the smooth sides.

Clay soil plays a part as well. When it cracks in late summer, crickets and other insects move toward foundations, and scorpions follow the food.

Scorpion Control Questions

Are Cedar Hill scorpions dangerous?

The striped bark scorpion's sting is painful but rarely dangerous for healthy adults. Kids, older adults and anyone with an allergic reaction should get medical care after a sting.

Why do I find scorpions in the bathtub?

They come in looking for moisture and cannot climb back out of a smooth tub.

Can scorpions get in through weep holes?

Yes. Brick weep holes lead into the wall cavity. Copper mesh lets moisture out while blocking scorpions.

Will general pest control take care of scorpions?

A general program helps by cutting down on the insects scorpions eat. Most homes with regular sightings also need exclusion work.
